vma password too simple

Trying to install VMA (vSphere Management Assistant) to do some cool vmware command line stuff, but after the install it’s giving me a nightmare trying to set the password. No matter what I try it tells me I have a bad password, based on a dictionary word, too simple, too simplistic / systematic. Everything I try, 20 letters numbers and symbols are still too simple? I am about ready to kick this computer screen.

Google to the rescue, here is a password that vma will accept: Qazx123!#
Now you all know my vma password, i am going to change it to something simplistic and systematic that I will remember and which you don’t know 🙂

Solved SquirrelMail ERROR: Connection dropped by IMAP server. Query: CAPABILITY

We removed a user’s account and then decided we still wanted access to the mailbox. After re-adding the account, SquirrelMail was saying nothing but:
ERROR: Connection dropped by IMAP server.
Query: CAPABILITY

To fix this, I looked at the UID of the fileowner of the email files. Then I edited /etc/passwd so that the re-added user had the same UID as the files. Then all worked correctly with Squirrelmail, hooray.

Easy way to copy / clone a virtual machine in ESXi Free edition

Clone an ESXi VM in 10 easy steps

1. Access VmWare vSphere Client.
2. Make sure the machine to be copied is powered off.
3. Go to the Configuration tab and click on Storage in the Hardware menu.
4. Right click on the datastore holding the machine to be copied and browse to the machine.
5. Select the vmx and vmdk files (should be the two files at the top of the list), right click and select copy.
6. Browse to the datastore where you want the new clone to exist, create a new folder named for the machine.
7. Open the new folder and right click paste the two files. this will take some time depending on the sizes.
8. right-click on the pasted vmx file and select “add to inventory”, enter a new name for the new machine.
9. Close out of the datastore windows and access the Virtual Machines tab. The new machine should be listed.
10. Power on, open the console, and select “I copied it”

Boot it up and make sure you have your desired network settings. Might need to refer here for that.

Fatal error: Call to undefined function self_admin_url()

while updating a wordpress site, saw the subject error….

Seems like this happened because the recovered password wasn’t changed. That generated a warning which I suppose led to the fatal error during the upgrade process. So everything was fine, but note to self: change the recovered password before upgrading.

Now updating another custom wordpress site’s plugins, for how long will I see this?
“Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance. Check back in a minute.”
removed the “.maintenance” file in the top level folder and that got us back on track.

You do not have sufficient permissions to access this page.
another one… someone deleted the admin account. inserted user ID 1 and let’s see if it works… nope did not work, also need to look at wp_usermeta table – found that user 2 has the admin permissions!

Death of Meebo Messenger

I started using Meebo sometime maybe 6 months after it launched. Loved it and told everyone I know to use it too. Sometimes there were bugs, but the team actually responded and fixed them! What an awesome company. But over time things began to change.
When Meebo relegated messenger to a secondary page, the writing was on the wall. When the google buyout was announced, the fat lady was singing. Now it’s official and Meebo messenger is allegedly going down for good on July 12, 2012.

I don’t know all the intricacies, but it seems like there must be a way to make this a money-maker for google, or at the least, a goodwill generator. There are so many people who have loved and depended on meebo, I understand libraries especially depend on it.

I know someone who works at google, I’m going to ask if they can appeal this decision. I remember when Sandy and Elaine used to write the blog posts about the exciting growth and happenings of the fledgling business. Now they are sipping pina coladas on a beach for the rest of their lives, which must be nice, and i don’t blame them, but for the rest of us who plan to continue working on multiple computers and devices, isn’t there a way to keep meebo messenger alive?

Update: I’m now using imo.im for web-based instant messaging, and although it’s not 100% as good as meebo, it’s pretty close to what I need.

PFSense error: kernel: arpresolve: can’t allocate llinfo for

Still trying to figure this one out. I preconfigured a bunch of rules on a pfsense installation on a VMWare guest. When I attach LAN & WAN, I can ping both sides but can’t get out from LAN to the internet, I think traffic is not passing between LAN & WAN.
